ATPMET · ATPL subject

The DGCA ATPL Meteorology question bank.

DGCA examines ATPL as three separate subjects, so Meteorology gets its own bank and its own paper. 491 questions at ATPL standard, across the whole weather syllabus.

ATPL Meteorology is a 100-question paper in 3 hours. Relative to CPL it leans harder on the upper air, on operational decision-making, and on reading forecast products rather than reciting definitions.

What to know about
ATPL Meteorology.

What the paper testsWeather as an operational input

At ATPL standard the questions move from "what is it" to "what does it mean for the flight". Jet stream position affects your flight plan; a temperature deviation affects your levels; an icing forecast affects your route.

Answers that describe the phenomenon correctly but miss the operational consequence are the ones this paper is built to catch.

Why it is its own subjectDGCA examines ATPL in three parts

General Navigation, Meteorology, and Radio Aids & Instruments are examined as three separate DGCA subjects, so AIVR CPL holds three separate banks with three separate 100-question papers, and tracks readiness for each independently.

Where marks go missingThe upper air

Candidates who did well at CPL often lose marks on the higher levels — tropopause height and temperature by latitude, jet stream structure and the associated clear air turbulence, and the relationship between upper winds and surface systems.

Alongside that, forecast chart interpretation is a routinely under-practised source of easy marks.

How to work through itBuild on the CPL bank

The CPL Meteorology bank is roughly three times the size and covers the same fundamentals more gradually, including the Indian climatology chapters. Use it to build, then use this bank for ATPL-standard practice.

Then sit the 100-question paper on the clock.

Inside a question

Not a list.
A worked answer.

Every MCQ is graded the moment you answer it, and the explanation shows the reasoning rather than just the correct letter.

  • 01
    Auto-graded

Pick an option and get instant right or wrong with the correct answer revealed — except in exam mode, which reveals nothing until you submit.

  • 02
    Formula box first

Numericals carry the governing equation on its own line, so you can revise by formula before you revise by question.

  • 03
    Numbered method

Worked step by step from the given data to the answer, with nothing skipped.

  • 04
    Chapter tagged

Every question carries its chapter and whether it is theory or a numerical, so a wrong answer tells you what to revise.

ATPL Meteorology · ISA Theory

In the International Standard Atmosphere, the tropopause is at 36,090 ft with a temperature of:

A−40 °C
B−45 °C
C−56.5 °C
D−73 °C

Worked solution

ISA: 15 °C at MSL, lapse 1.98 °C/1,000 ft to the tropopause, isothermal above
  1. 136,090 ft ÷ 1,000 × 1.98 °C = 71.5 °C of cooling
  2. 215 − 71.5 = −56.5 °C — option C
  3. 3Above the ISA tropopause the atmosphere is taken as isothermal, so −56.5 °C is held to 65,617 ft.
  4. 4Note this is the standard tropopause. The real tropopause is higher and colder over the equator and lower and warmer over the poles.

ATPL Meteorology FAQ

Is the DGCA ATPL Meteorology bank free?
Yes. All 491 questions and the full-length timed paper are free for life.
Is ATPL Meteorology separate from CPL Meteorology?
Yes — DGCA examines it as its own subject with its own paper, so it has its own bank on AIVR CPL. The CPL Meteorology bank is larger and makes a good foundation.
How long is the ATPL Meteorology paper?
It is 100 questions in 3 hours, marked out of 100 with a pass at 70.
Does it cover forecast chart and code decoding?
Yes — METAR, TAF, SIGMET and forecast chart interpretation are examined here, and the CPL Meteorology bank carries dedicated decoding chapters for extra practice.
