What to know about
Piper Archer III DX.

What the paper testsAn Archer that is not a normal Archer

The DX is the compression-ignition Archer: a turbocharged, liquid-cooled, jet-fuel engine driving a constant-speed propeller through a reduction gearbox, managed by an electronic engine control from a single lever.

Everything a candidate knows about a carburetted PA-28 — mixture, carburettor heat, magneto checks — is the wrong answer here, and the paper is built around exactly that trap.

What is insideOne type, nothing else

Each of the six aircraft types is a separate subject on AIVR CPL, so an Archer DX practice set, test and exam paper are drawn only from the Archer DX bank.

Where marks go missingHabits from the AVGAS Archer

The most expensive mistakes here are transferred: applying AVGAS fuel figures, expecting a mixture control, or answering a run-up question with a magneto check.

The electrical system also matters more than on a spark-ignition aircraft, because the engine control depends on it — a point the paper returns to.

How to work through itA small bank, so run it dry

Compact enough to work end to end. Practice mode through the systems, test mode until nothing new appears, then the 50-question paper on the clock.

Inside a question

Not a list.
A worked answer.

Every MCQ is graded the moment you answer it, and the explanation shows the reasoning rather than just the correct letter.

  • 01
    Auto-graded

Pick an option and get instant right or wrong with the correct answer revealed — except in exam mode, which reveals nothing until you submit.

  • 02
    Formula box first

Numericals carry the governing equation on its own line, so you can revise by formula before you revise by question.

  • 03
    Numbered method

Worked step by step from the given data to the answer, with nothing skipped.

  • 04
    Chapter tagged

Every question carries its chapter and whether it is theory or a numerical, so a wrong answer tells you what to revise.

Piper Archer III DX · Powerplant Theory

The Piper Archer III DX differs from a conventional Archer III principally in that its engine:

AIs supercharged and burns AVGAS
BBurns Jet A-1 and uses compression ignition
CIs a free-turbine turboprop
DDrives a fixed-pitch propeller directly

Worked solution

  1. 1The DX is fitted with a Continental CD-155, a compression-ignition engine certified on Jet A-1.
  2. 2Compression ignition means no magnetos, no spark plugs and no mixture control — so the run-up and cruise procedures differ from an AVGAS Archer.
  3. 3Power reaches a constant-speed propeller through a reduction gearbox, commanded by a single power lever through the engine control unit.
  4. 4Answer: option B.
